Director Lokesh Kanagaraj recently shared an update about Rajinikanth’s new movie, which is tentatively called ‘Thalaivar 171’. He revealed that on April 22, 2024, they will announce the title of the film with a teaser. Lokesh also shared a cool poster of Rajinikanth from the movie. In the poster, Rajinikanth looks tough and stylish, wearing handcuffs made of gold watches against a backdrop of mechanical parts.
Lokesh said in an interview that they are still working on preparing for the movie, and they plan to start shooting in June. The whole process will take about one to one-and-a-half years. After finishing ‘Thalaivar 171’, they will start working on ‘Kaithi 2’ with Karthi.
‘Thalaivar 171’ is Lokesh Kanagaraj’s first movie with Rajinikanth. It’s being made on a big scale by Sun Pictures. Although not much is known about the movie yet, the poster suggests it might involve themes related to time and gold. Despite rumors of a crossover with Suriya’s character Rolex from Lokesh’s Cinematic Universe (LCU), Lokesh clarified that ‘Thalaivar 171’ is a standalone film.

The movie is expected to be an action-packed thriller, bringing Rajinikanth back to intense action scenes. There are rumors that Sivakarthikeyan might also be part of the cast, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The music will be by Anirudh Ravichander, and the stunts will be directed by Anbariv. The full team will be revealed on the day the title is announced.
Some fans speculate about a Rolex crossover in the film, given the watch-themed poster. However, Lokesh has made it clear that ‘Thalaivar 171’ is not part of his larger cinematic universe. The movie is being produced by Sun Pictures, with music by Anirudh. More details about the cast and crew will be revealed on the day of the title announcement.
Apart from ‘Thalaivar 171’, Rajinikanth will also be seen in ‘Vettaiyan’, directed by TJ Gnanavel, alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, and Rana Daggubati.
